BMPD was formed in 1974. Wade Teeple and Walt LeBlanc were the first two officers hired and they attended the Indian Police Academy in Brigham City, Utah.
The department provides law enforcement on the reservation, including tribal land on Sugar Island. Officers work in conjunction with other tribal, state, and federal authorities for the protection of community members. Department provides escorts for funerals, lockout service, and fingerprinting in addition to emergency services. Dispatch is available 24-hours. Officers patrol via vehicle,off-road vehicle, and snowmobile and provide the community with additional policing on foot at local events, and work with area schools through a community resource officer.
